We've created some new greeting cards for Orthodox Christians celebrating adult Baptisms and Chrismations that have quotes from St. Justin Martyr.
These debut a series we have planned with quotations from our Holy Fathers - and Holy Mothers! - and that will include cards for a variety of occasions and holidays. This series will include simple cards with an Orthodox Cross and a quote by a Saint on the cover, a Scripture verse inside on the left panel, and a verse appropriate for the occasion.
Our favorite of these first three cards is Illumination Congratulations. We chose a wonderful quote by St. Justin Martyr, the great Christian Apologist who was martyred circa 135 A.D. He wrote in The First Apology, in a section titled On Christian Baptism:
And this washing is called illumination, because they who learn these things are illuminated in their understandings.
The verse says:
Rejoice! You are baptized and chrismated into
the ancient faith! Welcome to the family of our Orthodox Church! May God
always bless you.
And we paired this with a verse from Scripture, written by the Apostle St. Paul in his Epistle to the Ephesians 4:4-5:
There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of
your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of
all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
The other two cards with St. Justin Martyr quotes are wonderful, too.
One, Patience and Gentleness, is a card that may be used by anyone who wants to thank someone else for their Christian leadership. But this card is also especially appropriate for the newly illumined to give to anyone who has been important in his or her walk to Faith.
The other card, Persuade, is specifically meant for the newly illumined to give to anyone who has been important in his or her journey to Orthodoxy, specifically mentioning baptism and chrismation. Persuade is a great card to give to a Godparent.
